Within a period of just 15 months, the race engine department of Audi Sport designed and developed a homogeneous direct-injection engine based on the successful engine of 1999 and 2000. The new engines went on to power the two Audi R8 race cars to an impressive victory in the Le Mans 24-hour race in June 2001.
